Double chin / submental fat

Localized submental fullness—cryolipolysis, injectables, or surgery depending on anatomy.

Overview

Submental fullness can persist even at healthy weight because of genetics, bone projection, and fat distribution. It is not always solved by diet alone.

Evaluation distinguishes fat under the skin from prominent salivary glands or bony recession—each requires different treatment.

Contributing factors

Weight gain, aging, and posture (head-forward position) can accentuate the look.

Treatment options

CoolSculpting® cryolipolysis reduces fat in pinchable bulges when skin elasticity is adequate. Injectable deoxycholic acid is available in some regions for submental fat—swelling downtime is expected. Liposuction or neck lift remains surgical options for significant laxity.

Fillers along the chin can improve projection in selected profiles but do not remove fat.

What to expect

Non-surgical fat reduction evolves over weeks to months; swelling may temporarily look worse before improvement. Multiple cycles are possible.
